Summit Description, Organizers and Sponsors
Homeschooling Summit: Problems, Politics, and Prospects for Reform, was held virtually June 9-11, 2021. The gathering was by invitation only and convened leaders in education and child welfare policy, legislators and legislative staff, academics and policy advocates, medical professionals, and others, to discuss children’s rights in connection with homeschooling in the United States. The focus was on problems of child maltreatment and educational deprivation that too often occur under the guise of homeschooling, in a legal environment of minimal or no oversight. Experts lead conversations about the research on child maltreatment and educational outcomes associated with homeschooling, the current regulatory environment, proposals for legal reform, and strategies for effecting such reform.
The Homeschooling Summit was co-organized by Elizabeth Bartholet, Morris Wasserstein Public Interest Professor of Law and Faculty Director of the Harvard Law School Child Advocacy Program, and James Dwyer, Arthur B. Hanson Professor of Law, William and Mary Law School. Summit sponsoring organizations were Harvard Law School Child Advocacy Program, in cooperation with the Academy on Violence and Abuse, American Professional Society on Abuse of Children, Institute for Human Services, New York Foundling, William & Mary Bill of Rights Institute, and Zero Abuse Project.
