Child Advocacy Program Signs In Support of Social Justice Reform in Juvenile Fees and Fines

"Because monetary sanctions are rooted in a history of racial subjugation and reinforce and heighten racial disparities, the DOJ guidance should recommend that states and localities end, not mend, juvenile fees and fines."

June 14, 2021 by Margo Strucker

The Child Advocacy Program (CAP) was signatory in a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland requesting updated guidelines from the Department of Justice on juvenile fees and fines.  The letter, dated June 8, 2021, calls for the updated advisory to 1) recommend that states abolish juvenile fees and fines and 2) incorporate recent case law and emerging research regarding the constitutionality of juvenile fees and fines.
